Understanding the Difference Between Subterranean, Drywood & Dampwood Termites

At Blast Pest Management, we know that not all termites are the same, and neither are their treatment solutions. Termites can generally be classified into three main types: subterranean, drywood, and dampwood. Each species has unique nesting behaviours, moisture needs, and feeding habits, which is why accurate identification is key to effective treatment and long-term prevention.

Where They Live

  • Subterranean Termites nest in the soil and typically attack timber that’s in contact with the ground. They are masters at creating mud tubes to access food sources undetected.
  • Drywood Termites don’t need contact with the soil at all. They live entirely within dry timber, drawing moisture from humid air, often making their way into roof timbers and furniture.
  • Dampwood Termites are attracted to wet, decaying wood. You’ll usually find them in areas with consistent moisture problems, like leaking bathrooms, under subfloors, or damaged roofing.

How Much Damage Can They Do?

  • Subterranean Termites are the most destructive species in Australia. Their massive colonies can damage not only timber structures but even underground cables, chewing through plastic sheathing and causing electrical faults.
  • Drywood Termites might live in smaller colonies, but they can silently cause major structural damage over time. They often go unnoticed until the timber gives way.
  • Dampwood Termites are less of a threat to sound structures, but in moisture-damaged areas, they can accelerate wood decay. Remove the moisture source, and their colony won’t survive for long.

How to Spot Them

  • Subterranean Termites leave behind telltale mud tubes, made from soil, saliva, and faeces, on walls, stumps, or foundation areas.
  • Drywood and Dampwood Termites are sneakier. Look for small piles of frass (termite droppings) near tiny holes in the timber. While it takes a microscope to tell their droppings apart, the presence of frass alone is a clear warning sign.
